Who Are You, Anyway?!

How Self-Awareness is the Key to Success

At this point in our lives, we’re all aware of what IQ is: intelligence quotient. We nerd out about some of the highest IQs in history and follow the lives of these remarkable individuals who are mind-blowingly smart with their brain capacity and how they apply it. But what if I were to tell you there is a ‘Q’ most people are missing that is literally the key to success?

Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. In the world of engineering, all this arises in one meeting or even an hour at the office. The good news is, this amazing super intelligence is learned – not acquired like IQ. It is broken into four categories: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness, and Relationship Management.

Why You Should Care

Paying attention to emotional intelligence isn’t just picking up a hobby of learning something new, it’s a deep investment in your personal and professional development. The same way the most effective engineers apply the engineering process to their everyday lives, being conscious of emotional intelligence and learning to flex your EQ muscle will totally transform your life. EQ affects your performance at school or work, your physical health, your mental health, and your relationships.

So How Do I Start?

First and foremost, you have to begin by recognizing your self. For anyone who has taken a philosophy or psychology class, you’ll know this can get confusing and those of you who haven’t – it’s the definition of ‘who you are’. This includes but it not limited to: your emotions, your thoughts, your behaviors, your personality, your strengths and your weaknesses. Examples are introvert versus extrovert, the ‘life of the party’ or a ‘book-worm’, or being a thinker or a doer. Self-awareness is acknowledging the core of who you are and rather than fighting yourself; learning how to be the best version of yourself you can be simply by being mindful.

So here’s a mini-test:

When you’re studying or trying to read and can’t focus to save your life – what do you do? Do you throw the book on the ground and find something else to do or do you get up shake it off or do you try to fight through it?
