Syronna Brown grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, interested in fashion and style. However, when it came to choosing a career, her mother suggested she pursue a career in engineering or law. After learning more about the subject, she became the first in her family to pursue a career in engineering and obtained her Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering from Mississippi State University, all while maintaining her passion for style and fashion. Once in the workforce, she added to her qualifications with an MBA from the University of Phoenix, as well as Six Sigma and Project Management certifications.
She has been awarded the 2014 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Premier Profile Select award and the 2015 Engineer of the Year award from the Greater Phoenix Area Engineers’ Week. Syronna currently serves as the Section President of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Phoenix and performs K-12 educational outreach with SWE and NSBE. She also empowers girls and young women in STEM and encourages them to find their own style, brand, and confidence through her company Style Kemistry.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Syronna about her STEM career and her advocacy work. Below is Part 1 of the interview with this awesome STEM woman! #STEMGirlsRock
Suzanna: What do you do as an engineer?
Syronna: Currently my title is Senior Staff Systems Engineer and my role is developing and managing the common engineering processes and training for the [General Dynamics Mission Systems] GDMS organization. What this means is that I am responsible for the documentation of standard engineering processes, templates and tools that our engineers use to do their job and provide/manage any improvements needed to these assets. In addition to developing training for engineering, I also deploy and conduct various training throughout the engineering organization as well.
Suzanna: What do you like to do outside of engineering?
Syronna: I am into fashion, style & STEM. Right now, I am starting to blog about this passion again. It’s part of my company Style Kemistry. I am a STEM advocate for minority girls and women. I travel often, last stop was Belize. I love the movies, nothing like the big screen and buttery popcorn!
Suzanna: Cool. What do you like best about engineering?
Syronna: The options and opportunities that I have. With engineering, you can do almost anything else and that provides flexibility in your career and life. [Also], wow, what I do impacts the entire [GDMS] organization!
